Understanding Section 106 Investigations
The objective of the Section 106 investigation is to identify all properties listed or potentially eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) within the area of potential effect APE. The (Phase I) investigation is performed in three stages: an archival review of listed cultural resources, the pedestrian field survey of the APE, and the authorship of a report detailing the findings of the investigation.
Federal regulations require that an investigation of historic and archaeological cultural resources within the APE of any project. The applicant and permitting agency must define the APE.
